food that I buy, cook and eat

how much of a difference does a pizza stone make (as opposed to just putting it on a tray for the first half of cooking and then removing from the tray for the second half)? Is it worth the purchase?
I think it's worth it with homemade pizzas, but don't bother with premade. It wasn't that expensive. I've heard you can just use a large unglazed ceramic floor tile, but have never tried it!
